Description
10 maja 1940 Winston Churchill obejmuje funkcję Premiera Rządu Jego Królewskiej Mości. W inauguracyjnej mowie padają słynne słowa "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat" (Nie mam do zaoferowania nic, tylko krew, trud, łzy i pot). I słowa te będą wyznacznikiem polityki Churchilla na kolejnych pięć lat. Lecz teraz jest jeszcze rok 1940, sierpień. Winston Churchill wchodzi na dach, by oglądać bombardowanie miasta. Teraz krwawi i płonie Londyn, a Churchill dozbraja flotę, omawia plan przejęcia kontroli nad portem w Narwiku, usiłuje wciągnąć do wojny Stany Zjednoczone. Niechętni mu z początku współpracownicy zaczynają go podziwiać, krytycy dostrzegają w nim męża stanu. A Niemcy? Larson po raz kolejny ujawnia swój ogromny talent w roli opowiadacza, odsłaniając przed nami bardziej i mniej znane szczegóły z dziejów II wojny światowej.
Description
On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill takes over as Prime Minister of His Majesty's Government. The inaugural speech includes the famous words "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat". And these words will be the determinant of Churchill's policy for the next five years. But now it's still 1940, August. Winston Churchill climbs onto the roof to watch the bombing of the city. Despite howling sirens and explosions, London plays, lives and loves. People are terrified, but they want to live more. All this was due to the prime minister who had promised the Third Reich a few months earlier that it would bleed and burn. Now London is bleeding and burning, and Churchill is rearming the fleet, discussing a plan to take control of the port of Narvik, and trying to drag the United States into the war. But the prime minister's controversial decisions are gaining more and more support among the British. Eventually, there is someone who can and wants to oppose Hitler. His colleagues, at first reluctant to him, begin to admire him, critics perceive him as a statesman. And Germany? Germany is planning a coup ... "The Year That Changed Everything" is the compelling story of the first months of Winston Churchill's rule. Erik Larson has written a historical report in a truly cinematic style. This book is read like a novel, although the events it describes have been drawn from memories and testimonies of witnesses, and not from the author's imagination. Thus, the book consisted of a titanic work: collecting and analyzing source materials, as well as a colorful and plastic reconstruction of events. Larson once again reveals his enormous talent as a storyteller, revealing to us more and less known details of the history of World War II.
