Noir is a gritty genre, born of the cultural upheaval of post-WWI and the Great Depression. Once the exclusive province of fictional spies and detectives, it has since branched out to include science fiction, humor, and a myriad of other subgenres.

This movie adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's classic gumshoe book kicked off Hollywood's love affair with Noir and is considered one of the greatest detective movies ever made.
